The Green in Steel
In recent years there has been a growing trend toward “building green” with sustainable construction.
For a building to meet the parameters of sustainable design, its plan and construction must include built-in design features and materials that utilize renewable energy, enhance energy efficiency, safeguard water and water efficiency and conserve materials and resources.
Here are just a few ways that Steelway contributes to sustainable design:
- Recyclability
Steel is the most recycled material in North America, with an average recycling rate of 70 percent. Two out of every three kilograms of new steel are produced from “old” steel, for buildings, appliances, bridges and other infrastructure products that have extremely long service lives. - Durability
Metal roofs and wall panels can reduce waste due to their unmatched durability and resistance to fire, wind and insects. Metal roofs last between 40-60 years and require less maintenance than other types of roofs. - Cool Roof Colours
Steelway offers cool paint colours for our metal roof panels. When used properly, a cool roof can reduce energy consumption, providing significant cost and energy savings. - Solar Technology
Steelway Building Systems metal roofs provide an ideal substrate for solar arrays and offer unique environmental and performance advantages such as durability, low maintenance, recycled material and reflective coatings. - Retrofit Roofing
When applied over an existing roof, a retrofit system delivers an aesthetically pleasing effect while improving energy efficiency and providing water runoff solutions.
LEED
Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in over 160 countries.
Many organizations are now requiring LEED certification for their buildings. Steelway products can be credited with a significant number of points in the following categories:
- Site Design
- Site Access
- Water Efficiency
- Energy & Atmosphere
- Materials & Resources
- Innovation
